Five questions to ask a financial adviser

It can be helpful to prepare a list of questions before you see your financial adviser to make sure you cover everything you want to during your meeting. Here are five questions to help get you started:

  1. Check the return on the investment and the length of time you have to invest it for.
  2. Ask to see the key features document for each product the adviser recommends. It’s a useful document to have as it summarises the key features of the product. It is a regulatory requirement that all financial service companies have to produce these documents.
  3. Ask to see the adviser’s commission fees/charges.
  4. Ask them what type of adviser they are: are they a single-tied adviser, multi-tied adviser or an independent financial adviser?
  5. Don’t be afraid to ask for more time to consider all the options in more detail. The adviser will be more than happy to arrange a follow up meeting.
